Information on laser whitening

Is laser whitening an option for you?

  • Everyone’s teeth darken over time.
  • Teeth whitening is suitable for everyone, with a few exceptions. It is not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers nor for children, people with gum or dental problems or with translucent teeth.
  • Whitening doesn’t work on dental filling materials.

Things you should know before whitening your teeth:

  • 14 days before whitening. If you have sensitive (painful) teeth, we recommend brushing them twice a day with a toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.
  •  2 days before whitening. Do not use an antiseptic mouthwash, such as chlorhexidine (Corsodyl, Paroex), which stains the teeth, tongue and oral mucosa. If you have sensitive teeth or if you grind your teeth at night, we recommend avoiding citrus fruits and acidic drinks, such as wine, fruit juice and energy drinks.
  • On the day of the procedure. Do not use toothpaste while brushing your teeth in the morning.
  • 1–2 hours before whitening. To avoid tooth ache, we recommend taking an ibuprofen painkiller. Follow the instructions on the packet.
  • It’s a good idea to eat before the whitening as you should not consume anything apart from water for two hours after the procedure.

After the procedure:

  •  Do not eat anything for two hours. You can drink water.
  • Next 4 hours. We recommend avoiding tobacco products, acidic foods (pH less than 5.5) and foods that can stain your teeth: coffee, tea, cola drinks, energy drinks, red/white wine and other alcohol products, chocolate, salty/sweet liquorice, soy, ketchup, beet, carrot, pepper, curry, berries (blueberry, strawberry, etc.), apple, grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, kiwi, seaweed, soda/mineral water, vinegar-based products (balsamic vinegar), pickle, etc.
  • Avoid toothpaste that STAINS or contains SODIUM BICARBONATE.
  • 7 days after whitening. Avoid using chemical oral cleansers and antiseptic mouthwashes (Corsodyl, Paroex, Listerin).

Your teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold after the procedure.

The sensitivity will pass in a couple of days. If you have enamel defects, such as white spots, on your teeth, they may become visible after the whitening. They will even out in two weeks.

To ensure a good result, we recommend cleaning your mouth carefully (including brushing your tongue) and rinsing it with water each time you eat something that may cause staining.

Whitening does not alter the structure of your teeth or prevent them from staining.

To keep your teeth white for longer, we recommend scheduling a regular maintenance appointment as well as removing any calculus or staining.
